September 3 - Saint Gregory the Great (540-604) - Patron of Teachers, Pope and Doctor of the Church; Saint Gregory was appointed Chief Magistrate of Rome at age 34; He was one of the seven deacons of Rome, founded seven Monasteries and became a Benedictine at age 35 years; He is especially noted for his contributions to Liturgical celebration - Gregorian Chant

SEPTEMBER 8 - BIRTH of MARY  [Feast] Mary is the daughter of Ann and Joachim of the race of David;  Hers is one of only three birthdays celebrated by Church

September 9 - Saint Peter Claver (1580-1654)  Saint Peter was born in Catalonia Spain and joined the Jesuit order in 1604;  In 1610, traveled  to Cartegena (Columbia) - a major market for African slaves;  There he met incoming slave ships with food and medications and followed the slaves to the plantations where he sought more humane treatment for them

September 13 - Saint John Chrysostom [Golden-Mouthed] (344-407) Patron of Orators, Bishop and Doctor of the Church,  An anchorite, and later bishop of Constantinople, Saint John was one of the most famous orators of the age;  His talent for correcting Emperors resulted in his death in exile.

SEPTEMBER 14 - EXALTATION OF THE HOLY CROSS  This Feast commemorates recapture of Cross from Persian invaders in 614;  It also reminds us of finding of Cross by St Helena in 326

September 15 - Our Lady of Sorrows   We commemorate the Seven Sorrows, or Dolrs, of Mary: Prophecy of Simeon, Flight into Egypt, Loss in Temple, Meeting on way to Calvary, The hours at foot of the Cross, Taking down from Cross, Burial of Jesus; These were formerly celebrated on the Friday before Palm Sunday and on the third Sunday of September;

September 16 - Saints Cornelius  [Pope] and Cyprian [Bishop]  (early 3rd century)  These holy men witnessed to power of papacy and its right to establish rules for return of apostates

September 20 - Saints Andrew Kim Taegon [Priest] and Paul Chong Hasang and  Companions (19th Cent)  Today we celebrate the death of various Korean Martyrs of 19th century;  Especially noted are Sint Andrew, first Korean priest and pastor, and Saint Paul, a lay apostle;  This memorial was added to Roman Calendar in 1985  in Pope John Paul II’s effort to honor the martyrs of all countries

September 21 - SAINT MATTHEW [Feast] Apostle and Evangelist, Patron of Bankers  Saint Matthew is also known as Levi the tax collector - Mark 2:14 & Luke 5:27-32;  Saint Matthew wrote the Gospel directed to the Jews;  It focuses heavily on the fulfillment of prophecies of the Messiah;   Its structure indicates that it was probably originally written in Aramaic, but only Greek translations available;  Saint Matthew probably evangelized in Ethiopia, Partha and Persia

September 23 - St. Pio of Pietrelcina (Padre Pio)  (1887-1968) A Italian Capuchin monk best known for experiencing the stigmata [wounds of Jesus] he also experienced many other mystical phenomena.  However his greatest virtue was his complete obedience to his superiors

27 September  - Saint Vincent de Paul (1580-1660)  Patron of Charitable Societies;  After ordination Saint Vincent was captured by pirates  and spent two years as a slave in Tunis;  After his escape his dedication to God was greatly enhanced;  He founded the Vincentians to train Clergy and, with St Louise deMarillac, the Daughters of Charity, to serve poor in their homes.

29 September - SAINTS MICHAEL, GABRIEL, and RAPHAEL [Feast] - Archangels; Saint Michael [Who is like to God?] is patron of Policemen, paratroopers, mariners, grocers and the sick [Daniel 10:13, 21, 12:1, Jude 9, Revelation 12:7]; Saint Gabriel [Man of God] is patron of Communications Workers [Daniel 8:16, 9:21, Luke 1:19, 26]; Saint Raphael [God heals] is patron of Travelers [ Tobit 5:4 - 12:22]  There are nine choirs of angels: Seraphim, Cherubim, Thrones; Dominations, Virtues, Powers; Principalities, Archangels, Angels;  These three are the only ones named in Scripture;  Though names as archangels, it is likely that their rank is much higher

 30 September - Saint Jerome (4th-5th cent)  Doctor of the Church, Patron of Librarians; Saint Jerome lived much of his life in solitude;  He studied Hebrew and translated Scripture into the vernacular (Vulgate) of his day, ie Latin;  The result was the official Bible of the Church for over 1500 years
