The Unborn Victim of Crime
Bill,
also know as the Lacy and Connor Law, passed the U.S.
Senate on Thursday, March 25 and now goes to President Bush who
has promised to sign it. It establishes that a violent crime that
injures or kills a mother and her unborn child involves two crimes
with two victims under federal law.
The greatest threat to the bill came from an amendment offered
by Senator Diane Feinstein (D-CA). That amendment would have
changed to the bill to make injury and death of a mother and her
unborn child only a one victim crime. Fortunately it narrowly
failed, 49-50. All who called their Senators should be proud of
their contribution to the narrow victory that was won.
We regret that some members did not get our email alert in
time. Our email system has been under attack by those who do not
want the Catholic message out. It unfortunately has had an impact
on our communications. We are taking steps to deal with the
situation.
With the passage of this law, federal law is now coming into
agreement with the laws of 29 states that recognize unborn
children as persons who can be victims of violent crime. See how your two Senators voted.
