The BIG LIE about Life. . .How they redefined when human life begins by Theo Stearns

The power of even one lie can never be underestimated. For many years, "conception" was synonymous with fertilization, the moment when egg and sperm meet and mingle to form a genetically complete and unique male or female human being. However, in the 1960s, promoters of the pill and the IUD actually redefined "conception" as implantation of the embryo in the uterus, which occurs several days later. Why? To disguise the fact that birth control pills and IUDs can effectively destroy human life by preventing implantation in the womb after conception has occurred—that is, these methods sometimes or always act as abortifacients. A woman never knows when she is having an early or "silent" abortion. By this deception, many are led to believe that they are using only a "contraceptive."
In the 1973 Supreme Court decision Roe v. Wade, the Court declined to take a position on "when human life begins." The Court claimed that this was too difficult a question to resolve—a question which scientists, philosophers and various experts were unable to agree upon.

Before the Lie
ut up until 1965 there had been no great difficulty or controversy in the scientific and medical communities; human life began at fertilization. In 1933, Planned Parenthood's renowned promoter, Dr. Allen Guttmacher, affirmed this: "We of today know that man is born of sexual union; that he starts life as an embryo within the body of the female; and that the embryo is formed from the fusion of two single cells, the ovum and the sperm. Thsi all seems so simple and evident to us that it is difficult to picture a time when it was not part of the common knowledge."
In 1952, another Planned Parenthood physician, Dr. Abraham Stone, made a sharp distinction between contraceptives and abortifacients: "...the mechanical and chemical methods currently employed, or any biological method that would prevent ovulation or fertilization, merely prevents life from beginning... Measures designed to prevent implantation fall into a different category. Here there is a question of destroying a life already begun."

A New Definition Was Needed

As it became evident that the IUD was effective because it caused early abortions, anxiety grew about its acceptance. In 1962, Planned Parenthood's medical director, Mary Calderone, warned that "if it turns out that these IUD's operate as abortifacients, not only will the Catholic Church be against them, but Protestant churches as well." In 1964, when it was observed that Muslims would reject the IUD if they knew it was abortifacient, PP's infamous researcher, Dr. Christopher Tietze, suggested that such people need not be disturbed if a new definition of conception could be promoted and widely accepted ... "If a medical consensus develops and is maintained that pregnancy, and therefore life, begins at implantation, eventually our brethren from the faculties will list."
Contraceptive Technology Produces Abortifacients

In other words, by a simple twist of words, a great deception could be used to trick those who otherwise would shun the destruction of human life in the womb. Abortifacients could henceforth be labeled "contraceptives. "And so it happened. In 1965, the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology quite abruptly accommodated birth control promoters by publishing a new definition: CONCEPTION is the implantation of a fertilized ovum. No new scientific discovery brought about this change in terminology. It appears to be completely pragmatic—in order to obscure the truth about the abortifacient characteristics of rapidly developing birth control technology.

By 1968, contraceptive advocates had conveniently forgotten when human life begins—convenient because it would soon become evident that newer and safer forms of birth control pills act as abortifacients as well as contraceptives. Some, such as most lUDs and progesterone-only pills, do not stop ovulation at all.
The Effects of the Lie

During the decade of the sixties, the era of the sexual revolution, Christians in large numbers, both Protestants and Catholics, accepted and used these new forms of "contraception" without knowing the reality of how they worked. This continues to be the case today. Thus, in 1973, the Supreme Court, claiming it could not deal with the question of when human life begins, "legalized" the destruction of human life in the womb from the moment of conception up to the time of actual birth. The fact that the court decision begins with a mention of the importance of population control suggests an interest beyond the health and "private" concerns of women. It also mentions menstrual extraction, the "morning-after" pill, and artificial insemination—all of which involve the destruction of embryos. It seems that, in 1973, the Justices were well aware of the problem, i.e. that effective birth control ultimately involves the destruction of newly-conceived human life.
A 1992 Supreme Court decision (Planned Parenthood v. Casey) actually states that because we live in a society of people who have founded their lives on the habit of contraception, abortion has become a necessity.

The Most Effective Way. . .Killing

So in the end, it has turned out that the most effective way to control births is to kill the babies either surgically or, even better, by pharmaceutical products or abortifacient devices. Today there are scores of drugs and devices in the medical marketplace which physicians and the public call "contraceptives," although they often kill an already-conceived child before or during the process of implantation. The latest and most dramatic of these products is being' marketed as "emergency contraception" (morning-after pill). EC is explicitly promoted as "never causing abortion" -- because, by definition, it acts before implantation is complete!

Always conscious of their questionable position on the beginning of human life, the anti-life forces continue to express concern that any proposed anti-abortion laws would also restrict certain types of "contraceptives" and research procedures.

Can We Afford to Ignore Contraception?

Unfortunately, many prolife advocates focused their work on opposing surgical abortion and seemed to ignore contraception; meanwhile, abortifacients were developed, successfully marketed, and their use became a national habit.
In-vitro Fertilization and Stem Cell Research A door was left wide open for the destruction of human life through development of in-vitro fertilization and the production of "spare" embryos. The many embryos who die in the process of producing one live birth were ignored as well. At the same time, stockpiles of stored frozen embryos grew until there are now an estimated 150,000. This made embryonic stem cell research possible and this opened up a new arena for the destruction of life. Already private researchers have created embryos simply to be destroyed and used as biological material. Work on human cloning is advancing as well.

The redefinition of conception has produced no less than a revolution in our personal and social morality. Embryonic stem cell research highlights the erosion of respect for human life in its earliest stages and the progress of the culture of death in dehumanizing the unborn. The very language is something Hitlerian—"unused," "spare"—in which "useless" life can be used to benefit others! When it is asserted that these embryos are defended as being human beings, the culture of death responds—"No, it is only a cluster of cells." Those who defend them are vilified as fanatics who oppose scientific progress and the welfare of humanity itself! The truth --- that the aims of stem cell research and the many promising benefits it may well produce can be accomplished by the use of adult stem cells is very often left unspoken by the media and those who are advocating embryonic stem cell research.
