Dear ,
We hope you had a blessed Christmas
celebration and that your new year
is off to a good start! Things are
buzzing around the Maryknoll Mission
House and we have many opportunities
to become involved in mission.
We started off the year with
installing a Peace Pole in the front
yard. Two kind supporters of
Maryknoll donated a pole to us and
one to the Buddhist Compassion
Meditation Center just three blocks
away. On January 19, a group walked
from the Maryknoll house to the
Temple to join the Vietnamese
community there for the dedication
of their Peace Pole. Buddhists and
Catholics share a common desire for
all people to walk gently upon the
earth, to treat each person with
dignity and to work for peace in our
everyday lives.
On March 9th Maryknoll will dedicate
its own Peace Pole and we would love
you to be a part of the celebration!
Please join us for Mass at 9:30am
followed by the blessing in front of
the Mission House at 16642 Ashland
Ave., San Lorenzo 94580.
Refreshments will be served
afterwards. To RSVP and for
directions or questions, please
contact Kris East at (510) 276-5021
or keast@maryknoll.org.
Join us for our West Coast Maryknoll
Mission Symposium with Fr. Anthony
Gittins, CSSp., Ph.D. on March 25th.
Read the details below.
Keep reading below for details on
other events that are coming up
soon. We hope to see you around the
Mission House!
Blessings,
Kris

2014 Maryknoll Mission
Symposium with
Fr. Anthony Gittins,
CSSp., Ph.D.
Going Forth with Joy:
Mission in the
Spirit of Jesus and Pope
Francis
Tuesday, March 25,
2014
9am - 3pm
St. John the Baptist
Catholic Church (Parish
Hall)
264 E. Lewelling Blvd., San
Lorenzo, CA 94580
The words "mission" and
"evangelization" are two
of the most important --
and sometimes
misunderstood -- notions
that are foundational to
the Church. Join us as
we explore their
meaning, looking to Pope
Francis' apostolic
exhortation, Evangelii
Guadium as a road map.
Accepting Jesus'
invitation to carry on
his mission means
creating and living a
culture of encounter. Fr
Gittins will guide us in
exploring the essential
discipleship themes of
pilgrimage, accompanying
the poor, working in the
margins and crossing
borders.
Lunch is included and
overnight accommodations
can be requested.

Immersion Experience for
Teachers, Catechists, and
other parish ministers
June 17-26, 2014
Bring the world into your
ministry and programs.
Teachers, catechists, DREs,
and diocesan ministers play
a key role in helping
Catholics to grow in
Christ's love and experience
the world beyond their
borders. Through
Maryknoll's Immersion
Program, Catholic educators
and ministers have the
opportunity to find God in
new and unexpected places,
and to bring that experience
of mission back to their
parish and diocese.

Maryknoll Mission
Immersion Experience in the
Tenderloin district of San
Francisco in collaboration
with the St. Anthony
Foundation
July 14 - 18, 2014
Do you have to go overseas
to experience mission? What
is the connection between
poverty in the U.S. and
elsewhere in the world?
This program is designed
for teachers, DREs,
catechists, deacons, wives
and others who minister in
the Church and who wish to
increase their awareness of
their baptismal call to
mission and to pass that
mission on to others. Join
us as we explore how mission
begins at home but extends
to the ends of the earth.
Participants will stay at
the Maryknoll Mission House
in a retreat setting and
travel daily on BART to St.
Anthony's Foundation to
encounter God in the poor,
elderly and homeless who
struggle to survive in the
Tenderloin area of San
Francisco.

Taizé Candlelight Prayer
Gathering
Second Wednesday
of the Month at 7 pm
Taizé-style
prayer is a
meditative common
prayer using song,
chants, scripture,
reflection and
periods of
contemplative
silence, a prayer
that does not end,
but continues in the
silence of the
heart. Within this
sacred space one is
drawn into a deeper
awareness of God's
presence; it is a
prayerful
opportunity for
self-reflection.
Contemplative
prayer is seen
as a critical
path in
mission. It is
through prayer
that we are
connected with
God and it is in
the silence of
our hearts that
God communicates
and shares with
us God's mission
of love for the
world.
The Taizé gathering
will be held the
second Wednesday of
every month in the
Chapel at the
Maryknoll Mission
House at 16642
Ashland Avenue, San
Lorenzo. Admission
is FREE. Sorry, no
wheelchair access.
The hour long
service will start
at 7:00 p.m. with
Ruth Picha. Ruth
is a Spiritual
Director, who
trained at Mercy
Center in
Burlingame.
