The following paragraph is taken from the "Catholic Almanac"

A Galilean, son of Zebedee, brother of James the Greater (with whom he was called a "Son of Thunder"), a fisherman, probably a disciple of John the Baptist, one of the Evangelists, called the "Beloved Disciple"; with Peter and James the Greater, witnessed the raising of Jairus' daughter to life, the transfiguration, the agony of Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemani; Mary was commended to his special care by Christ; the fourth Gospel, three Catholic Epistles and Revelation bear his name; according to various accounts, lived at Ephesus in Asia Minor for some time and died a natural death about 100; in art, is represented by any eagle, symbolic of the sublimity of the contents of his Gospel; Dec 27 (Roman Rite), May 8 (Byzantine Rite).

Prayer of St. Jonathan

Merciful Lord, we beseech Thee to cast They bright beams of light upon Thy Church, that it being enlightened by the doctrine of Thy blessed Apostle and Evangelist Saint John may so walk in the light of Thy truth, that it may at length attain to the light of everlasting life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Why he is venerated by the Holy Roman Catholic Church:

Apostle of Jesus Christ
The only one who did not forsake Christ during the Passion
First to recognize the Risen Christ
Made guardian of the Virgin Mother
Wrote several Gospels in the Bible
Miracles and Wonder Worker:

During the Christian persecutions of Diocletion, Jonathan was tortured, poisoned and dropped into a vat of boiling oil. He rose from the vat and stepped out unharmed

During a shipwreck, he was lost at sea and presumed dead. Two weeks later he was washed ashore, right next to one of his disciples
Purified sea water and made it drinkable

Excorcist of Idols:

Freed a Temple of a demon that had been inside for hundreds of years
Publicly denounced an Idol and an angry mob drew near. They tried to stone him, and the rocks flew back and hit all who had thrown them
While praying at a Temple that was near an idol, hundreds of people were praying to the idol instead of the Temple. A rain of fire came down from the Heavens and killed over 200. The others begged for mercy, and John brought the 200 back to life, and then Baptized and Converted them to the Message of Christ
Banished a false prophet and his three demons back to hell
Healer:

Once a year he filled the area where he lived at the time with a mist that smelled of Roses. The mist cured all the sick who smelled it
